Obama urges 'political courage' to save health bill
- Former US President Barack Obama has called on members of Congress to act with “political courage” and not repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) which was approved in 2010 under his tenure, after the House Republicans on May 4 approved to revoke it.
During his acceptance speech for the “Profile in Courage” Awards at the John F Kennedy library in Boston, Obama on Sunday night praised those lawmakers who voted for the ACA also known as Obamacare seven years ago, especially those who lost their parliamentary seats in doing so.
“These men and women did the right thing. They did the hard thing. Theirs was a profile in courage,” the former President said.
But he also lashed out against those who just follow the doctrines of their party, despite knowing that their actions would harm the weak, in his first major political speech since leaving the White House on January 20.
