Abandoned by husband, Bareilly woman wants to live in mental hospital, help other inmates
- Bareilly: In a poignant reminder of just how mental illness is seen in
India, a woman whose family refused to take her back said she wanted to
stay on at the Bareilly mental hospital where she “felt more protected”.
She has been living in the facility, intermittently, for nearly two
decades being treated here and pronounced as cured. The 55-year-old
woman, who is a graduate, now wants to spend her time teaching inmates
and helping officials of the institution. The matter came to light nearly
two months after the Supreme Court said that it favoured rehabilitation
norms for the mentally challenged and their release from hospitals
after they are cured.
